Liquid Gold: Why Colostrum Harvesting Might Be Right for You
Ileana Berrios, MS, IBCLC
You’ve heard the term “liquid gold” before—now let’s talk about why it’s one of the most powerful gifts you can give your baby before they even arrive.
As your body prepares for delivery, it’s already producing colostrum—the thick, nutrient-rich first milk packed with everything your newborn needs. Colostrum harvesting (aka antenatal hand expression) is the process of collecting this early milk before birth to store and use later.
Whether you’re planning a home birth, c-section, or just want to be extra prepared, this small act can make a big difference!
What Is Colostrum and Why Is It So Special? ✨
Colostrum is your body’s first milk—golden in color and supercharged with:
-
Antibodies to protect your baby from infections
-
White blood cells to support immunity
-
Growth factors for gut and brain development
-
Nutrients concentrated into tiny, powerful drops
It’s no wonder we call it liquid gold!
Even a few drops can help stabilize blood sugar, support immunity, and soothe early feeding transitions.
Who Should Consider Harvesting? 🤔
Colostrum harvesting is helpful for everyone, but especially if:
-
You’ve been diagnosed with gestational diabetes
-
You’re planning a c-section
-
You’re expecting twins or more
-
Baby may be born early or need NICU care
-
You want to practice hand expression and gain confidence before baby arrives
Talk to your provider first to make sure it’s right for your pregnancy.
When Can I Start? ⏰
The sweet spot is around 36–37 weeks of pregnancy.
You want to wait until your body is close to full term to avoid any early contractions—so always check in with your OB or midwife before starting.
How Do I Harvest Colostrum? ✋
Hand expression is gentle and effective—no need to use your pump!
Here’s how to get started:
-
Wash your hands and find a clean, calm space
-
Warm your breast with a warm compress or shower
-
Massage in circles to get milk flowing
-
Use your thumb and fingers in a “C” shape to gently compress
-
Collect drops into a sterile syringe or container
-
Label & freeze it right away!
Don’t be discouraged if you only collect a few drops at a time—that’s normal! Every drop counts.
How Do I Store It? ❄️
-
Use sterile 1–3 mL syringes or containers
-
Freeze ASAP after collecting
-
Label with date and time
-
Store in a deep freezer for up to 6 months
When it’s time for delivery, bring your frozen colostrum to the hospital in a small cooler with ice packs.
When Will I Use It? 👶
Your harvested colostrum may be used if:
-
Baby is sleepy or not latching
-
You’re separated due to NICU care or recovery
-
Baby needs blood sugar support
-
You want to supplement without formula
You or your nurse can offer it using a small cup, spoon, or syringe—no need to wait for a perfect latch.
Colostrum harvesting isn’t just for high-risk situations—it’s a beautiful way to connect with your body, feel prepared, and build confidence before birth.
It’s simple, safe, and incredibly rewarding.
