Is My Baby Nursing for Comfort or Hunger?
Hey there, tired mama (or papa!) đ Letâs set the scene: itâs 2:37 AM, your baby is latched (again), and youâre wonderingâŚÂ âAre they actually hungry, or are they just using me as a human pacifier?!â đ
First of allâyouâre not alone in this thought spiral. Itâs one of the most common questions I get as a lactation consultant: Is my baby nursing for food or feelings? Letâs dig into the mystery of the milk vs. the snuggle. đľď¸âď¸â¨
Babies Donât Read Schedules, They Read YOU đâ¤ď¸
Newborns donât exactly follow the clock. Their tiny tummies empty fast, and they feed frequentlyânot just for calories, but for connection, warmth, and reassurance. This means that yes, sometimes your baby wants milk, and yes, sometimes they just want you. And guess what? Both are valid. đ
Clues Your Baby Might Be HUNGRY đź
If your little one is:
-
Rooting (turning their head looking for the nipple)
-
Sucking on hands or smacking lips đ
-
Crying with a low, rhythmic ânehhhâ sound
-
Sucking deeply with audible swallowing (gulp, gulp!)
Then ding-ding-dingâtheyâre probably hungry! đ˝ď¸
Clues Your Baby Might Be COMFORT NURSING đ
Comfort nursing often happens when baby:
-
Is flutter sucking (tiny, shallow sucks with long pauses)
-
Has already had a full feeding recently
-
Is dozing off at the breast đ¤
-
Calms down instantly at the breast (but isnât actively eating)
Comfort nursing isnât a bad habitâitâs how your baby regulates their world đâ¤ď¸. It lowers stress hormones, boosts oxytocin (the love hormone đ), and builds your milk supply. WIN-WIN!
But WaitâCan It Be Both? đ¤Ż
Absolutely! Babies are clever little creatures. đ§ They often start a feed hungry and end it cozy. Or they might comfort nurse and end up taking in more milk than youâd expect. Breastfeeding isnât just about nutritionâitâs about bonding, soothing, and survival.
SoâŚShould I Let My Baby Comfort Nurse? đ§âď¸
Hereâs the truth: comfort nursing is normal and healthy. If it works for you and your baby, go for it. If you're feeling overwhelmed, touched out, or unsure, you're not failingâyou're human. And you don't have to figure it out alone.
